No Time for a Bib Sewing Project? what about Maxy Moo Moo…

No time for that easy Bib sewing project? That’s OK, here’s my Maxy Moo Moo bib review…

Maxy Moo Moo

excellent bib brand, Maxy Moo Moo

I hate to admit it, but when you have a child, sometimes things can’t wait. We just don’t always have time for that bib sewing project that needs to be done. Here is my review on an excellent bib brand, Maxy Moo Moo. When things got a little uncomfortable, we went with this brand, and I have to admit they are really nice.

I made my son’s bibs out of extra receiving blankets. As I noted in an earlier blog post, he just spits up on everything. My wife and I were always washing bibs, and when they started to get a little tight around the neck, we broke down and bought some great bibs on Amazon.

This is tough for me to admit, especially on a sewing blog, but buying extras bibs instead of making them was really helpful. If anything I can say it gave me ideas for my next project if I decide to make more.

About the Maxy Moo Moo bib…

  • They are 100% WATERPROOF BIBS – Triple Layer Protection – a waterproof inner layer sandwiched between two soft, absorbent outer layers. Catch spills and protect your baby’s clothing. Not to mention they keep them pretty dry.
  • THREE POSITION SNAP FASTENERS – No more velcro scratching your baby’s skin or ruining your laundry! Our snap closures are quick & easy for you, but your baby can’t pull them off. I have to admit this was a nice feature.
  • PERFECT FOR ALL DAY DROOLERS – Large, absorbent bibs to protect clothing and keep your baby clean and dry. Solid bright colors, with NO tacky catch phrases or printings, and/or stitched on, cartoon character that gets in the way when you are trying to clean up.
  • They have a MONEY BACK Guarantee which is nice, but they are strong, and you will like them! – They also have a “Lifetime Baby Proof Guarantee.” If you aren’t entirely satisfied with your purchase, just let them know, and they will refund you in full.
  • Who cares about the BEAUTIFUL GIFT BOX, Right?! well is so nice we decided to keep it and put his baby keepsakes in it. Everything comes presented in a gorgeous magnetic gift box that you can re-purpose. Maxy Moo Moo bibs make the perfect baby shower gift, or you can buy some for your friends.

Like I said, I hate to admit it on my sewing blog, but these are really nice. Again, You can find other reviews on Amazon at Waterproof Baby Bibs with Snaps: Unisex Gift Box 10 Pack, Solid Colors by Maxy Moo Moo

Is Sewing really a lost art?

Is Sewing really a lost art?

Is Sewing a lost art, Really?…

SewingSeriously, Sewing is not a lost art? please… So yeah its not maybe say “treading” on twitter but its not dead. Sewing is a skill that anyone can learn and knowing how to sew can help you save time and money. If you’re not an expert, it’s OK; nobody starts off that way. If you are really interested in learning, take your time and have fun with it.

Learning how to sew can be fun and rewarding. You can making a few extra dollars on the side if you want which is also nice. The best part is you don’t have to pay $25, $40 per item at an alteration shop.

Many people have learned this skill and use their talent every day. Remember, there is plenty of information available to you.

The sewing machines I have reviewed are two of the easiest to work with, ideal for beginners and the price is not bad. To Learn more about the Brother Project Runway model or the Brother XL-3750 click on the links and learn why I recommend these two brands.

I bought my first machine for about $80 on Amazon and now that same machine is $230. I don’t know why the price jumped but you really shouldn’t have to spend more than $150 for a good machine, my opinion.

There are so many options available to you, shop around and find the machine you can afford and the one you think is right for you.

Sewing is a pretty great skill to know. I don’t like asking people for help with something especially if I know I can do it my self. I would recommend finding a project you have always wanted to try and study how other people do that project. You can always put your spin on things and make it your own.

Use the information provided on this site, order a sewing machine, start practicing and get sewing.

Turn Your New Sewing Skill Into Cash…

New Sewing Skill

Do not be afraid to turn your New Sewing Skill into cash. Learning this simple skill takes practice and a good sewing machine, but you would be surprised at how many people don’t know this skill.

Once you have “mastered” this skill (proficient at least) if you find you have a passion for sewing, you can earn money sewing for others.

Being skilled at sewing could lead you down a path to profit off your new skill and earn extra income. Many good tailors and dressmakers today sharpened their skills over time by practice.

Supporting local business is always important, but when you can do it yourself, why not?!

Some of the ways I have made money…

Some of the ways I have made money is by helping a co-worker hem up some of her pants and skirts. Show off your new set of skills and let people know around the office that you can help. You would be surprised how many people don’t know how to sew.

Take this chance to be that person to step in and help. Call local tailors or dry cleaners to get an Idea of how much to charge. I usually cut that price down and explained to my co-worker that I could do it cheaper than “that place.”

Make sure you have the right color thread and get started, that’s it! or you can do projects for people like the t-shirt quilt. For this, you can charge whatever you want. A t-shirt quilt is a custom job so charge what you would like. It all depends on what they are willing to pay.

Your skill set is something that will only improve with time and practice. There is nothing wrong with getting paid for your set of competencies. There are countless projects you can get good at and sell. What are you waiting for?

Need more Advice and Tips? Here is one Sewing Book you must Have

Read a Sewing Book, First time sewingThere are many books available on how to sew. If you are going to read a sewing book, this is the one and only book I recommend if you are sewing for the first time.

What Others have said after they Read THIS Sewing Book

Never sewn before? Just bought your first machine? Buy this book! | Amazon Reviewer

“I figured sewing was a skill I should probably learn, and just purchased my first sewing machine. So I bought several books to go along with my machine, as I wasn’t sure where to begin. I paged through most of them and grew intimidated by the sometimes undefined words, or instructions without enough images for me to grasp what needed to be done. This was the one book out of the four I purchased that I read from cover to cover immediately. This book is perfect for people like me, who have never sewn a stitch, or been around someone who has. I felt intimidated after unboxing my machine, but this book made me feel confident enough to begin my first project.

In short, if you’ve never done a thing with sewing before and want to learn, this is the book you should start with. The images are clear, the directions are precise, and it goes into enough detail that I felt like I could progress without feeling frustrated.”

You can find this book on Amazon I get it, everyone learns in different ways. This is a great book for people who learn better from books!

Simple Sewing Terms You Must Learn and Why!

Learn Some Simple Sewing Terms…

simple sewing termsUnless you already know what a blind hem stitch or a straight hem stitch looks like, it might be a good idea to learn a couple of these simple sewing terms. This way you know what you need for each stitch and what to search for online for help.

Here is a sewing chart to explain the different stitches and the reasons you may need to use a particular stitch.

Also here are some simple sewing terms terms to learn…

  • Seam: A seam, is the line where two pieces of fabric are held together by a thread.
  • Hems: the edge of a piece of cloth or clothing that has been turned under and sewn.
  • Straight stitch: The most common stitch you will sew. You will use this stitch for just about every. You can use this to hem pants and make t-shirt blanket. The straight stitch will be used for many projects big and small.
  • Zig zag stitch: The Zig Zag stitch is a stronger stitch compared to a straight stitch, and best to use with stretchy fabrics. You can utilize it if you are working with different designs or patterns. This is also a good stitch to use when taking in clothing along the insides of your shirts or pants. It’s a good stitch to prevent fraying
  • Blind Hem: Practice the straight stitches first before you attempt this stitch. It is a great stitch to use with formal apparel and is a professional looking stitch. You can do it, but practice on scrap fabric before you move on to your good clothes.

To Learn More Simple Sewing Terms I Would Read…

Obviously there is more to learn than these terms when it comes to learn. I would highly recommend joining a Facebook group of sewing enthusiasts. YES, they are out there and its an awesome free resource to help you if you don’t have a coach. These people are always willing to help.

BUT, if you want to learn more on your own then I would pick up a copy of First Time Sewing: The Absolute Beginner’s Guide. It is a great resource and something I point back to if you need it.

Practice Will Improve Your Sewing Skills

YES, Practice improves a lot of things, practice  can even improve your sewing skills…

practice will improve your sewing skillsUnless you have someone teaching you or you hired an instructor, it is important that you practice. Practice will improve your sewing skills if you you keep at it. It is OK if you mess up a stitch, you can always redo it.

Practice on an old pair of pants or start out with the 3 simple home sewing projects included on this site. Try a burp cloth project or a T-shirt quilt. A really super easy project to try is adjusting your curtain length.

Regardless of the project you choose, know that its OK to try and make a pillow first. As a matter of fact that should have been my first project, but I went for it and made a T-shirt quilt.

Don’t get discouraged, no one starts out making perfect seems, the fact that you are even starting is great!

As you gain confidence, move to harder projects or work on your clothes.

Take your time and even if you mess up or a seam is not exactly straight, trust me, not everyone will notice.

…Unless you point it out or they are closely inspecting your seam, they will not be able to tell if a seam is a little off or not straight.

Practice Will Improve Your Sewing Skills SURE, but here is a PRO TIP: Make sure you have an Iron and an Ironing board…

That’s right, this is a must when you’re sewing and is an essential tool you should have in your arsenal.

A good Ironing will help keep fabrics pressed and easier to work with when it’s time to sew.

Not to mention this will, keep your clothes pressed and sewing projects looking professional.

The point is, just try! Do something, anything, get started!
