First things first! what kind of Sewing Machine should you get?…
Let’s cut to the chase; you don’t need a $900, industrial sewing machine for hemming pants or doing other simple projects. A simple portable sewing machine is all you’ll need.
Here is my advice, stay away from the high dollar, “top selling, high dollar machines,” you won’t need it. Unless you plan on opening up a business, a regular home machine will do just fine.
You can find a good machine for about $80 to $150 on amazon. Below are two of my recommendations.
The Brother XL-3750 Sewing Machine with Quilting Table…
- Lightweight, flatbed/free-arm convertible sewing machine with extra quilting features; with 35 stitches and 73 stitch functions. Lightweight is good if you plan on packing it up and storing it somewhere.
- Comes with sewing notions, quilting table, seven accessory presser feet, cloth carrying case, and user’s manual; integrated handle for transport. Now will you use all the extra sewing notions, quilting table, seven accessory presser feet?… not at first, but when you start on different projects you will be glad you have them.
Included is the link to the Owners Manuel for this machine. When I bought mine it didn’t come with one and I had to search for this one.
Now honestly, you will mainly use two to three stitches as a beginner including straight stitch, blind hem, and Zigzag. So, there is no need to get overwhelmed with all the different settings.
The quilting table is a nice feature to have when working on big projects. When I first start out sewing, I kept thinking to myself I need more table space to help me stretched out the fabric while I’m sewing.
After you get the hang of your machine, you’ll find you don’t need the extra support of a quilting table. If it comes with the machine, it’s a bonus!

A: You can order through amazon like I did, there are links at the bottom of this page. Shop around, find the one you really want. DO NOT get a battery operated, hand-held machine, they are the worst!
Q: Where can find a cheap machine?
A: You don’t want to go too cheap, like a handheld sewing machine (as seen on TV style, I had one, not so good…) be prepared to spend $80-$150 for a good sewing machine.
Q: What are the best machine available?
A: There are many great options out on the market, three of the most common are Brother, Singer, and Janome. The technology on sewing machines has not changed that much over the years so you’re safe with getting any of the top three. I have never had a problem with my Brother sewing machine but you should always shop around.
Q: Do I need Sewing Furniture?…
A: Getting sewing furniture or a sewing machine cabinet is not always necessary if you have a safe place to store your sewing machine.
A good Kitchen table can take the place of a sewing machine table just fine.
